Dr. Mary Lou Zeeman uses mathematics within cross-disciplinary research communities to help understand sustainability, climate change, and protecting the health of the planet. Zeeman is a co-director of the Mathematics and Climate Research Network (opens new window), a member of the executive council of the Computational Sustainability Network (opens new window), and a co-leader of the Mathematics of Planet Earth (opens new window) initiative. She is a professor of Mathematics at Bowdoin College.
2017 Festival – Math, Tipping Points, and Planet Earth

In this talk, we’ll explore the mathematics of “tipping points” — dramatic moments when a system suddenly shifts from one state to another — and see how it can help us to understand the Earth’s past and make better decisions for its future.
