2019 Festival: MathMINDs Games: South of the Sahara

Saturday May 4, 2019 from 10:00am - 4:00pm ET

MIND Research Institute took historical facts, ancient gameplay, mathematics, and the world around us to create a highly connected learning experience that adults and children can play through together. The South of the Sahara games are based on gameplay and events from Ghana, Mozambique, and Madagascar. History, culture, and geography actively ground the learning of new and complex ideas, which are delivered through story. South of the Sahara is designed to be played by families in either Spanish or English and there will be Spanish-speaking facilitators present. Games are accessible to learners at all levels, optimal for ages 7 to 12, and tantalizingly challenging for all. Jump into the stories to explore math through games!

MIND presents the South of the Sahara games along with additional activities developed by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art and the International Child Art Foundation, both based in Washington, D.C. During the festival, students and educators will discover how the arts and cultural stories from Africa can boost math skills and comprehension. Go global!

Math is from everywhere, in everything, and for everyone.

ASL interpretation will be provided at this event from 11:00am – 12:00pm.
